Stars Must Not Rest

The walk-over Harambee Stars got after rivals Ethiopia failed to show up in Nairobi for the preliminary round of the Africa Nations Championship on Sunday should not make the national team rest on its laurels.

Instead, the national team must lay strategies ahead of the next draw, as they seek to qualify for the first time in the championship, which is restricted to players competing in their respective local leagues.

It will be much harder for Kenya in the next round because the players haven't had a competitive test, and it might take a while before they jell. It thus demands of Football Kenya to quickly organise build-up matches to assess the squad fitness.

Harambee Stars was not able to make it through to the finals of the inaugural edition, which was held in 2009 in Ivory Coast.

However, they can dare to dream of making it to Sudan after CAF, the sport governing body, decided to increase to 16 the number of teams taking part in the final phase instead of the initial eight during the maiden edition.

With the local Kenyan Premier League picking up momentum, coach Twahir Muhidin must be on the look out to spot any new talent that need to be drafted into the team.

This is the easiest way for the country to try and reclaim its past glory. The exposure the players will get will then come in handy for the main campaign to qualify for the 2012 Africa Nations Cup.
