Twiga Stars Shine in Ethiopia

THE national women's team Twiga Stars launched their campaign in the African Women Championship qualifiers on a right foot, after defeating hosts Ethiopia 3-1 in the first leg match here today.

Following the away victory, Twiga Stars are one-foot into the next stage. They need a draw or any kind in their second leg match in Dar es Salaam in two weeks time.

Twiga Stars sensational attacking midfielder Esther Chabruma alias 'Lunyamila' put her side ahead after 23rd minutes, when she outpaced defenders to blast home with a close range. Mwanahamisi Omar scored the second goal in the 53rd minute, connecting home Fatuma Bushiri's corner kick.

However, Ethiopia pulled one back through a spot kick that was converted by Zaituni Yassin. With two minutes remaining, Twiga Stars drilled the final nail into Ethiopia's coffin, when Asha Rashid alias 'Mwalala' scored with a clinical volley.

Twiga Stars started the match a bit timidly and they sat back absorbing pressure. However, they picked momentum after the first 20 opening minutes and camped on their opponent's domain.

The home ladies efforts paid off dividends almost immediately when Chabruma stunner caught the keeper flat footed and they continued to dominate possession to the breather.

On resumption Twiga Stars started from where they had left in the first half, launching series of attacks that saw them netting the second just eight minutes from the restart. After the hosts had pulled one back, their coach opted for a change of tactics as he threw everything upfront.

It was an advantage for Charles Boniface Mkwasa's ladies, who switched the tactics to counter attacks that perfectly paid off with two minutes to go, when Twiga Stars put the score beyond Ethiopia's reach.

Twiga Stars goalkeeper Fatuma Omar was voted the best performer of the match. She made several stunning saves. Coach Charles Boniface Mkwasa praised the ladies for the job well done.

However, he was quick to warn it was too early to start celebrating. "Our opponents are tactically strong and we need to improve and be in our best to win the second leg match at home," he said.

The winner of the two legs will play against Eritrea who advanced to the next round, after Kenya had opted to pull out of the qualifiers.

The Women's African Football Championship is scheduled to be held in South Africa in October, this year, where seven national teams will join the host.
